Of the many challenges in commercial construction, perhaps the most daunting is conducting a full remodel while the business remains open.
The west-side location of Eye-Mart, on Pearl Drive, recently underwent a major updating that amounted to a complete remodel while still being fully operational each business day.
Just how complete was the remodel? Remodeling work included a complete change-out of all display cabinetry, desks, and other furniture, a large new bulkhead over the new front desk, new lighting throughout, new paint on all the walls, new carpet installed throughout, and new tile at the front entrance.
Throughout the entire process, customers of Eye-Mart were not subjected to the mess and disturbance of construction activity.
How was a remodel of this scale possible without disruption of business? Up to 90% of the work performed was scheduled after Eye-Mart closed for the day, and into the overnight hours. By the time the store was scheduled to open the next morning, Popham crews had completed the previous evening’s work and had cleaned up, allowing the store to open to customers each day.
By scheduling the work into phases, Popham crews were able to do the renovation one section at a time. According to Production Manager Grant Davis, “We would do one section of the renovation at a time by getting everything old removed and all the new put back in that area before we moved on to the next phase.” This allowed Eye-Mart to conduct business as usual, with very little inconvenience to them or their customers. Part of the success of this remodel was Popham’s commitment to keeping the job site clear and free of construction clutter during business hours. To this end, all new cabinetry and furniture was stored off-site in a warehouse. Everything was organized into all the different phases of the remodel so that crews could go to the warehouse every evening to pick up materials for that night’s work.
Quality workmanship is a hallmark of Popham Construction, and when a client chooses us for repeat business, it is a vote of confidence in our abilities. Dr. Robert Taylor, owner of Eye-Mart, has hired Popham for a number of projects, including work at his home as well as a remodel of his Owensboro Eye-Mart location. Because Eye-Mart wished to remain open during the construction process, Popham organized and scheduled the work to accommodate the business hours of the west-side location.
Popham’s John Diekhoff credits the scheduling and the work crew for completing the project ahead of schedule. “We completed the Eye-Mart remodel three weeks sooner than anticipated. We had a great crew on site and because we did all of the work at night, things went well overall.”
