J’s Sportsbar & Grill, located at 1602 Vann Avenue in Evansville, now occupies the former location of Ginny’s Place nightclub, which has been closed for three years. Higgins bought the property with the vision of creating a new venue with a new environment—a sports bar instead of a nightclub. To realize his dream, Higgins called Popham Construction. Higgins notes, “For many years, Popham has done work for me as well as other members of my family. We’ve been very pleased with their expertise, and we also like that Popham is an established, trustworthy local business.”

The existing building mainly consisted of a large front room with towering ceilings and a small kitchen in the back. Popham’s Tom Smith is Project Manager for the extensive renovation. “We began by gutting the interior,” Tom explains, “To increase space and energy efficiency, the front room was converted to two floors.” Upstairs holds office space and a bathroom. Downstairs, the sports bar room conveys a cutting edge look of high tech meets nature-inspired design. The addition of a black acoustic drop ceiling complements the strategically placed flat screen TVs while sections of chrome diamond plate wall paneling continue the high tech look. Incorporating natural elements into the decor has appealing results. A stunning 30 foot long stone bar anchors the room. Wooden tables and chairs add warmth to the space along with natural light filtering through the front windows. Whether you’re seated on one of the 25 bar stools or at a table, you’ll be comfortable viewing and cheering on multiple teams at once.

J’s Sportsbar & Grill and grill is open Sundays through Thursdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 am. Friday and Saturday hours are 10:00 am to 2:00 am. “Our hours reflect our focus on sports,” Higgins emphasizes. “It will be a fun place to have lunch or dinner while keeping up with your favorite teams.”

Speaking of food, Higgins is excited to utilize the beautiful new kitchen built by Popham. “I’m nostalgic about homemade bar food like real onion rings, cut and dipped in a batter made from scratch. We’ll have pork tenderloin sandwiches sliced from an actual tenderloin, and other classics like catfish fiddlers, and rib-eyes steaks,” says Higgins. “We’re also excited about serving chicken wings in a variety of flavors.” Supporting local vendors is important to Higgins. “There are many resources available in our area. From in-season produce to craft beer, we take pride in helping other local entrepreneurs.”

Growing up in Evansville, Higgins has been a sports fan all his life. Combining his interest in sports with his profession as a property investor naturally led Higgins to establish a sports bar. “I’ve wanted to design a cool, clean and modern sports bar with state-of-the-art technology in an atmosphere that’s comfortable, fun, and friendly,” explains Higgins. “Just an all-around upbeat place with great food and drinks.”
